Pilates is movement therapy for the correction of poor posture, poor breathing and poor muscle tone. The system is named after the genius bodyworker, Joseph H Pilates.
Until relatively recently, Pilates was the 'secret' of ballet dancers and actors. Such is its popularity these days that it is almost mainstream. This, unfortunately, is not all good news because as with so many systems that enjoy media hype for a few years, the integrity of the original system can be lost as popularity is gained. Classes have proliferated but are not often led by people with in-depth knowledge of the Pilates technique. It takes a number of years, not just a few weeks, to train a Pilates teacher to have a deep understanding of this remarkable method.
Pilates isn't just a collection of exercises, but a powerful means to restore good posture, strength, flexibility and agility to a weary body, run down by the stress of modern life. Pilates techniques are beautiful to do, beautiful to look at, graceful, elegant and energizing. The system is profound, thorough and life enhancing, something worth practising for the rest of your life.
